I am really not sure why the owner named this place Great American Hot Dog. Don't misunderstand - they are very good. But there are LOTS of places in the South to get a very good hot dog. What there are NOT is lots of places to get very good seafood. No - correction. Absolutely great seafood. We go to Maine once a year, and I grew up in Baltimore - I know seafood, and this place has the genuine "stuff". You can even get (be still my heart) an HTG perfectly prepared Maine Lobster Roll.
And if that isn't enough, nice crispy fries and lightly breaded onion rings. The one weakness is the TEA - but hey, the owner is from Maine so tea is not his forte. Just get water or a soda and enjoy the seafood! -

For a while, I lived in New England. Overall, it was a pleasant time that was beneficial in taking in all the centuries of history, and personal genealogy, and spectacular outdoor scenery. However, there is one thing that I could not stand, that drive me up the wall: the food, or rather what was passing for food.
Nutritionally and appearance speaking, there was nothing wrong with. Everything tried looked aesthetically pleasing. But flavor-wise, tasted like boiled cardboard. Everything was bland. It's as if the original Puritanical settlers of the area thought flavor was a sin, banned it, and their descendants decided to carry it on, for tradition's sake. It was frustrating, to say the least.
Sadly, this tradition has been transplanted from New England and brought here.
For sometime, my wife and I had been meaning to stop here for some time. In this case, it was with the promise of a po-boy (this is before we knew about Dat's Cajun) along with a lobster roll.
For the price we paid, we were both unamused at the lack of flavor.
Since then I've tried other menu items, just to make sure that it wasn't just the particular items. Sadly, it wasn't. Everything- flavorless.
But perhaps I'm coming from the wrong perspective. Perhaps it's me. Perhaps I'm not the target customer they have in mind. I did note that at every visit, I was the youngest customer, with all the others easily in their late sixties or later- much later.
In their favor, I will say this: the staff and owner are quite friendly and interactive, which I do appreciate. The establishment is also quite clean organized.
So, my recommendation is this: if you're over the age of sixty-five, and prefer your dishes to be toned-down, this is your place. If not, go to Hot Dog World instead. -

UPDATE:
A manager has reached out to me and let me know the food safety issues with their staff has been addressed.
In fact, I noticed that on my last visit a few weeks ago and now I will gladly recommend this local business to everyone.
Keep up the good work and keep food safety #1!!
With great regrets I only give 3 Stars.
I've rated here several times whenever I pass through Hendersonville and it's always been exceptional. In fact, today's onion rings and chili slaw dogs were excellent.......but the cook was in the back wearing a highly stained tank top.
This is a health code issue.
This needs to be fixed.
I will gladly change this review in the future when I see their staff operating in a healthy fashion. -

Not impressed with this place. Normal everyday food. Small portions, and everything is overpriced. Won't be back.

Really fresh lobster roll just like if you were in Maine!! Doesn't look like a lot when you get it but really fills you up by the time you're done. The owner, Tom is a very friendly guy and as soon as he heard my wife was from Maine, came out to talk to us. I wish I could order every seafood item on the menu !! Oysters, clams, scallops, shrimp sandwiches, plates and po boys. Very well priced for the freshness of the seafood but that's only half the story. After all, this is supposed to be a hot dog place. Also has burgers , fries, onion rings, zucchini fries( very good) salads chicken tenders and wow! Hard to decide what to get! And I just noticed, homemade soups. Today's flavors are tomato basil Asiago bisque and New England clam chowder.
